The Rolling Stone piece “A Rape on Campus” is a huge story in all senses of the word. It is long and expansive, documenting a culture at the University of Virginia that seems to shrug off sexual assault. It has also helped kick off a broad national conversation about fraternity culture, rape on campus, and whether our colleges and universities are equipped to adjudicate alleged sex crimes. At its heart, though, Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s article is about a single event: an orchestrated gang rape of a woman named Jackie. In the course of 9, words, Erdely chronicles an administration’s tepid response to a terrible crime. But what the piece is missing is one small thing: that single, standard sentence explaining that the alleged perpetrators of the crime deny it, or don’t deny it, or even that they could not be reached for comment. It’s often a boring sentence, on
For anyone interested in a whole range of issues, from womens rights to collegiate culture to the state of American journalism, the story at the heart of Calamity Wests Rolling was a big deal. The November 19, , issue of Rolling Stone magazine featured A Rape on Campus, Sabrina Rubin Erdelys report on allegations made to her by a University of Virginia student called Jackie, who said shed been lured into an upstairs room at the local Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house and gang-raped as part of an initiation rite. Erdelys piece caused a furor, first, because of the misogynistic savagery of the crime—then, only days later, because it had become apparent that no crime had taken place. Turns out Jackie made the whole thing up. Rolling Stone repudiated A Rape on Campus, the Columbia School of Journalism issued a damning study of editorial lapses at the magazine, and various victims filed suit.
According to a program interview, West became fascinated by the tale. She found herself wondering about the disgraced Erdely, ultimately asking herself, What would I do if I were her? Where would I go? Her answer, she says, was, Id go home. A

Sabrina Rubin Erdely vehemently defended some of her reporting choices — and fell on her sword for others — in more than eight hours of testimony with an attorney for Nicole Eramo, the University of Virginia administrator suing Erdely and Rolling Stone magazine for $ million.
Among her most striking statements were her final words, in which she said unequivocally that Eramo was not damaged by her reporting in “A Rape on Campus” and that her portrayal was “fair and accurate” — as were many other aspects of the piece.
“I stand by everything I wrote … except for anything that came from Jackie,” Erdely said.
Erdely penned the infamous November article that focused on what she presented as a climate of sexual assault at UVa through the lens of several student survivors, including “Jackie,” a then-student who claimed she’d been gang raped at a fraternity house during her freshman year at UVa.
