Beaumont Newhall

Born in in a town outside of Boston, Newhall attended Harvard University studying art history and museum studies. After receiving his Master’s Degree, Newhall’s professor, Paul J. Sachs, helped him obtain a job at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Continuing his graduate studies at the Institute of Art and Archaeology of the University of Paris, Newhall ran into financial troubles and settled on a job at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Setting up a darkroom in the men’s restroom, his passion for photography could not be overlooked and in , he was invited to curate a show on the history of photography where the first edition of his famous photo history textbook, The History of Photography, emerged.

During his time at the Museum of Modern Art, Newhall married Nancy Wynne Parker, a writer who would transform his artistic work through the addition of her words, in When discussing his relationship with Nancy, Newhall said, “ [We are] in every sense a pair. Through our blessed union we pull each other up. We continually build – and I know that we shall continue to do so, and that our future will be even more creative, constructive and sound than ever.”

Early life

William Beaumont and family

William Beaumont was born to Samuel Beaumont and Lucretia Abel in Lebanon, Connecticut; his father was a farmer. He left his home after he turned twenty-one, moved to Champlain, New York and obtained a teaching job. In he relocated to St. Albans, Vermont where he trained to become a physician through an apprenticeship with Dr. Truman Powell. In June , the Third Medical Society of the State of Vermont in Burlington examined his knowledge "on the anatomy of the human body, and the theory and practice of physic and surgery" and recommended him as "judicious and safe practitioner in the different avocations of the medical profession."

From until , Beaumont served as an assistant surgeon in the Army during the War of participating in the Battle of Plattsburgh. After the war ended, he started a private practice in Plattsburgh, New York, but by Beaumont had rejoined the Army as a surgeon. He was assigned a location at Fort M

Newhall studied art history and museum studies at Harvard University (). In , he mounted a survey exhibition of photography for the Museum of Modern Art, Photography, . The work exhibition toured the country and the catalog for the show became a staple for the history of photography. Ironically, Newhall's treatment of photography as high art rankled the museum's board of trustees, who accepted public criticism that the Museum was turning a popular medium into an avenue of snobbery. My edition is from , I found it in a small second hand bookstore in Slovenia and it’s one of the luckiest finds I’ve ever made.

The book is very comprehensive and it’s funny and amazing to me how a lot of attitudes have not changed for more than a years. Is photography an art? Some still claim that no it’s not. This discussion has been going on since the 19th century. Another one - people were using their 35mm cameras to take snapshots everywhere, all the time, even at theater plays so they had to ban them there. They were also worried that these cameras would drive down the artistic and technical value of photography. Just too many amateurs! Sounds familiar? That’s because smartphones today spark the same opinions.

This book is well worth a read and holds up really well, I found a lot of information that I had never seen on the internet. Probably because online people are focused on the newest and the greatest, completely oblivious that the arguments they make have been made many times before.
