Gustavo Rojas Pinilla

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla () was a Colombian general and dictator-president. Though he interrupted briefly Colombia's civil war, his rule ultimately became an oppressive regime of terror.

Gustavo Rojas was born in ancient Tunja on March 12, After receiving his preuniversity education at Tunja Normal School, he began his military career in , specializingin building airports. In he wrote a thesis at the Tri-State College of Engineering in Angola, Ind., on the building of airfields in Colombia. During the next 20 years, as he rose from lieutenant to general, Rojas was an engineer, building roads and airports. By he had become the director of civil aeronautics.

The Bogotazoriots of April 8, , marked a turning point in Rojas's life and the start of his political career. He suppressed the Cali rioters with such efficiency and brutality that he won the hatred of the Liberals and the approval of the Conservative dictator, Laureano Gómez, who promoted him in to commander in chief of the armed forces and sent him in to Washington to represent Colombia on the Inter-American Defense Board and to Korea to inspect Colombian troops there.

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, president of Colombia (–), was born in Tunja, Boyacá. Rojas attended the Colombian military academy in Bogotá and later studied engineering in the United States. After a stint as a road engineer, he rejoined the Colombian army during the war with Peru in , rising to the rank of lieutenant general by Despite his Conservative sympathies, on June 13, , Rojas deposed Laureano Góomez in a bloodless coup; his pledge to end the disastrous violencia and establish political peace was initially well received by both traditional parties. However by renewed violence, an economic downturn, and bipartisan opposition to Rojas's own political ambitions had weakened his position both within the armed forces and among the civilian political elites of both parties, and on May 10, , he was forced out by his fellow senior officers.
