Joseph Jean Baptiste Laurent Arban cornet is a French, born in Lyon February 28, and died in Paris on April 8, He is the author of Great Complete Method for cornet and saxhorn () which is still today the reference method for learning the trumpet and cornet. Jean-Baptiste Arban was probably the most brilliant French cornet player of his time. Very young, he enlisted in the Navy as a musician, playing cornopean. Thus, he participates in the voyage of the schooner "Belle Poule" which will look at St. Helena Napoleon's ashes. In , he entered the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris where he studied trumpet (natural) with François Georges Auguste Dauverné in and obtained a first prize. Joseph Jean-Baptiste Laurent Arban was a cornetist, conductor, composer, pedagogue and the first famed virtuoso of the cornet à piston or valved cornet. He was influenced by Niccolò Paganini&#;s virtuosic technique on the violin and successfully proved that the cornet was a true solo instrument by developing virtuoso technique on the instrument.

He was born in Lyon, France, one of the ten children of Simon Arban, artificier. An older brother was the balloonist Francisque Arban.

He studied trumpet with Francois Dauverné at the Paris Conservatoire from to He was appointed professor of saxhorn at the École Militaire in , and became professor of cornet at the Paris Conservatoire in , where Merri Franquin was among his students. He published his Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn in Paris in This method, which is often referred to as the &#;Trumpeter&#;s Bible,&#; is still studied by modern brass players. His variations on The Carnival of Venice remains one of the great showpieces for cornet soloists today. &#;Fantasie Brilliante&#; also continues to be frequently performed and recorded.

Arban, (Joseph) Jean-Baptiste (Laurent), French cornetist, conductor, and pedagogue; b. Lyons, Feb. 28, ; d. Paris, April 9, He settled in Paris, where he studied trumpet with Dauverné at the Cons. (–15). He was active as a conductor in salon orchs. and at the Opéra. In he became prof. of saxhorn at the École Militaire. In he established the cornet class at the Cons., which he taught until and again from until his death. From he made annual visits to St. Petersburg as a conductor. Arban founded the modern school of cornet and trumpet playing in France, and was the author of the standard treatise Grande méthode complète pour cornet à pistons et de saxhorn (Paris, ). He also made a brilliant arrangement of the Carnival of Venice for cornet. Among his other works are a Fantasie brillante and variations on themes from Bellini’s Norma and Verdi’s La traviata.

Jean-Baptiste Arban was a French musician, renowned cornet-a-piston player, composer, and educator. He is widely considered one of the first masters of the cornet-a-piston. Arban gained fame primarily for his skill on the cornet-a-piston, but he was also well-known for his teaching abilities. It should be noted that the cornet was not the only brass instrument he mastered; Arban was equally proficient in playing other brass instruments such as saxhorns, trumpets, and early versions of the cornet.
