Birth
Rene Descartes, French mathematician and philosopher was born in It was partly because of his contribution that western philosophy and mathematics flourished. In recognition of his contribution, he is often referred as “father or founder father of modern philosophy”. He is also considered as precursor of rationalist school of thought.
His Contribution to Mathematics
In mathematics, his contribution lies chiefly in geometry that’s why today he is known as father of analytical geometry. His main achievement was to bridge the gulf between algebra and geometry. Thus he is widely acclaimed as first mathematician who laid the foundation of modern geometry that resulted in development of analysis and calculus. With regard to algebra, he explained in detail that how algebric equations can be expressed and explained through use of geometrical shapes.
He also sought to find out the systematic meaning of knowledge by application of mathematical techniques. In this way, he broke from conventional scholastic-Aristotelian philosophy that used to explain haphazardly the interrelationship between ideas. Thus, instead of following the tradition, he replaced this casual explanation o

Descartes’ Early Life
Descartes was born in La Haye, France, in March of He was educated at a boarding Jesuit school when he was eight years old. There, he studied mathematics, music, astronomy, metaphysics, natural philosophy and ethics. Later, he earned a law degree when he was 22 from the University of Poitiers.

Early life and education
Descartes was born on 31 March in his maternal grandmother's house in La Haye, in the Touraine region of France. His father Joachim, a lawyer who lived in Châtellerault (22 kilometers southwest of La Haye, across the Creuse River in the Poitou region), was away at the Parliament of Brittany in Rennes. The town of La Haye, which lies 47 kilometers south of Tours, has subsequently been renamed Descartes.
When Descartes was thirteen and one-half months old, his mother, Jeanne Brochard, died in childbirth. The young René spent his first years with his grandmother, Jeanne Sain Brochard, in La Haye, together with his older brother Pierre and older sister Jeanne. It is likely that he then moved to the house of his great uncle, Michel Ferrand, who, like many of René's male relatives, was a lawyer, and who was Counselor to the King in Châtellerault. When Descartes met Isaac Beeckman in , Descartes introduced himself as “Poitevin,” or from Poitou (, 51–4; Rodis-Lewis , 26; see also ). At this time (and now and again later on), he signed letters as “du Perr
