Craft debate: Nkhensani Nkosi
“I don’t necessarily have an academic contribution to make about craft, only my experiences to share. I have always thought of craft as the overproduction and saturation of cultural concepts in the form of curios. Having been involved with crafters for a couple of years now I think that my understanding of craft has expanded significantly.
“Incorporating craft into our design aesthetic has given us an authentic connection to culture and heritage in a way we have grown to appreciate. Craft is really anything anybody wants it to be – I don’t think anyone can narrowly define it. To us it has been about people, communities, culture, collaboration, evolution, raw creativity and spirit. Breathtaking craft is about all of these experiences; it is about expression, language, symbolism, history, unity and harmony.

The morning of our interview, Nkhensani Nkosi bounces up to me, light as air. She is petite, pretty, busy, a compact bundle of energy. She leads me into her studio, the antithesis of a glamorous atelier and as devoid of pretension as Nkosi herself. Behind her, the photos of her collections make a colourful backdrop.
Sweeping swatches of material on the table aside, she smiles. “Behind the glamour of these photographs, there is a lot of hard work that goes on. Fashion is a business like any other, yet most people don’t possess the essential entrepreneurial skills. I am a graduate of the Stoned Cherrie School of Hard Knocks!”
Nkosi’s entry into the fashion world came about in a most unusual way. After reading Richard Branson’s autobiography, she thought, “Hell, why can’t I do something really big and wild like Richard Branson?”
And, in a moment many might call madness, she took her husband skydiving from a small plane for his birthday.

In the 10 years since Nkhensani Nkosi launched her local fashion label, Stoned Cherrie, she has been going from strength to strength to catwalk to retail space to fashion awards and a homeware range. Her designs are rewriting history and helping to change the way South Africans feel about themselves. And she believes that with a extra bit of love, great things are possible.
1. Can design save the world? Design can save the world because our definition of what design is has changed with the introduction of more eco-friendly design mechanisms and ideas. This however does not preclude man from taking responsibility for changing our attitudes and beliefs on how we treat the world around us. No design on its own, without us infusing love and respect, can sustain change.
2. What is your present state of mind? I am in a good space, energised, serene and blissfully creative.
3. What is your greatest achievement to date? My greatest achievements to date have been New York Fashion Week, contributing to the opening ceremony of the World Cup and being in business for 10 years.
