Pedro Poveda Castroverde nacque a Linares (Jaén) il 3 dicembre Fin da bambino fu attirato verso il sacerdozio. Entrò nel Seminario di Jaén e concluse gli studi in quello di Gaudix, diocesi in cui ricevette il sacerdozio nel Iniziò il suo ministero nel Seminario, dedicando anche la propria attenzione pastorale a coloro che vivevano nelle grotte situate all'esterno del nucleo cittadino, per i quali creò una scuola. Nominato canonico di Covadogna, si occupò della formazione cristiana dei pellegrini, iniziando al tempo stesso a scrivere le sue prime opere sull'educazione e il rapporto tra fede e scienza.
A partire dal , con alcune giovani collaboratrici, avviò la fondazione di accademie e centri pedagogici, che avrebbero dato inizio all'Istituzione Teresiana. Si trasferì a Jaén per consolidare l'Istituzione medesima che lì stesso avrebbe ricevuto l'approvazione diocesana e, successivamente, mentre egli si trovava a Madrid come cappellano reale, l'approvazione pontificia. Biography
Saint Pedro Poveda Castroverde, also known as Peter Poveda Castroverde, was born on 3 December in Linares, Jaen, Spain. He came from a devout Catholic family and felt a strong calling to the priesthood from a young age. Following this calling, he entered the seminary in Jaen in and later continued his studies at the seminary of Guadix in Granada, Spain. On 17 April , Pedro Poveda was ordained as a priest. He began his ministry teaching at the seminary and pursuing further studies. In , he received his licentiate in theology from Seville, Spain. It was during his time spent ministering in the poverty-stricken region of Guadix that Father Pedro Poveda became deeply aware of the need for education, particularly among the poor. Seeing the dire circumstances that children and adults faced in Guadix, Father Pedro built a school for the children and provided vocational training to the adults. In , he was transferred to Madrid and became a canon of the Basilica of Covadonga in Asturias, Spain. After ordination Fr. Poveda taught in the seminary and served the diocese in many other ways. In he completed a licentiate in theology at Seville and later began an apostolate among the "cave-dwellers", those who lived in dugouts in the hills outside of Guadix. Here he built a school for children and workshops for adults that provided professional training and Christian formation. He was misunderstood, however, and had to leave this special ministry.
So Fr. Poveda headed for the solitude of Covadonga, in the mountains of northern Spain, where, in , he was appointed canon of the Basilica of Covadonga in Asturias, where the Blessed Virgin is venerated under this title.
