Becoming Jane, which is based on the life of Jane Austen, cleverly weaves fact and fiction to make Austen the heroine of a love story not unlike those in her novels. Anne Hathaway plays Austen, and James McAvoy fills the role of the romantic hero, Tom Lefroy. While the movie is not a biography, certain aspects of the story of Austen and Lefroy are true. During the Christmas and New Year's season of , Jane Austen met a young Irishman named Tom Lefroy, who was visiting his uncle and aunt in Hampshire. Lefroy was on a break from his legal studies at Lincoln's Inn, London. Both Austen and Lefroy were twenty years old.
- Austen's only sister, Cassandra, was engaged to a young clergyman, who, in January , sailed with his patron-employer to the West Indies. While Cassandra was staying with her fiancé's family that month, Austen wrote two letters to her describing Tom Lefroy and their encounters.

This is, in its own kind, a short picture book for adult enthusiasts of Jane Austen, giving plates of the sights and places that Jane herself would have viewed and appreciated in her own time. It shows the many grand homes that she would have visited and some of the scenery of the cities and towns in which she lived. It does, at times border on dry reading, but is livened up with extracts of Janes own novels and some of her many letters written to her sister over the years describing events or feelings, making the photos come alive as one imagines the impact they had on Jane herself two hundred years ago. There are photos of locales that she based her fictional places on and photos of the idyllic countryside that she grew up in, the bustle of cities like Bath in which she lived and even shares photos of Winchester, where Jane lived out her last days.
