The First African American Woman Police Officer
The first African American woman police officer in the United States is presumed to be Georgia Ann Robinson, and she had a Kansas connection. Officer Robinson was orphaned as an infant in Louisiana, came under the care of her older sister for a few years, and then was placed into a Catholic convent. It was through the abbey she made her way to Kansas. Here, Georgia worked as a governess, married a Leavenworth City native, Morgan Robinson, was active in many community organizations, and served as a leader in women&#;s suffrage in Kansas (Bryan). The Topeka Plain-dealer reported in , the couple had a daughter named Marian (Bricklin).
Due to the start of World War I, the Robinsons moved from Kansas to Los Angeles. Literature does not indicate Morgan&#;s interest in the War at the time. Perhaps he and Georgia heard about the shortage of justice workers due to men enlisting to fight and thought they could assist in the labor force. Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Georgia began volunteer work at the Los Angeles Police Department [LAPD]. Georgia Ann Hill Robinson became the first Black female police officer to work for the Los Angeles (California) Police Department (LAPD)—and possibly the first in the country—in Months before 15 percent of the police force of the United States would begin enlisting to enter combat in the First World War, Robinson began her groundbreaking twelve-year career with the LAPD. Robinson’s work for the LAPD would lead her to civic work, and she would devote her life to serving the residents of Los Angeles by fighting against segregation and for women’s welfare.
Robinson was born Georgia Ann Hill in Opelousas, Louisiana, on May 12, She never knew her parents, was raised by her older sister, and later grew up in a Roman Catholic convent. When she was eighteen, Robinson moved to Kansas to work as a governess. There, she met and married Morgan Robinson. The couple moved first to Leadville, Colorado, and then to Los Angeles with their daughter Marian. Georgia Ann Robinson was the first black female police officer to work for the Los Angeles Police Department, and may have been the first black female LEO in the country. A recruiter reached out to her in based on her work for community organizations throughout the city and her obvious passion to help her fellow citizens. Robinson started out as a volunteer before becoming a full-fledged officer when she was hired as a jail matron in She also worked as an investigator in juvenile and homicide cases, and set up a much-needed women’s shelter in the city during her time as a cop.
When her career was cut short after she was blinded by a jail inmate, Robison continued to work with the community through the women’s shelter and by teaming up with the NAACP in the fight to desegregate the LA school system. In , when a journalist asked her about her LE career and the incident that ultimately blinded her, she said she had “no regrets.”
