Roald Amundsen
Tor Bomann-Larsen, Pen Hadow (Foreword), Ingrid Christopherson,
On 14 December , the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team became the first human beings to reach the South Pole, just over a month before Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition. He had already led the first expedition to traverse the North West Passage, and would go on to lead the first successful attempt to cross the Arctic by air (perhaps even becoming the first to reach the North Pole, according to some interpretations). Yet his personal life was messy to say the least, with a string of mistresses, including Eskimo girls he brought back to Norway, and a poisonous relationship with his brother. He disappeared in while taking part in an airborne rescue mission in the Arctic; his body was never found. Tor Bomann-Larsen’s account of his life is the only full biography of Amundsen to be published in English.

Five men, four sledges and fifty-two dogs, set off towards the south on 20 October Only a small number of dogs would make it all the way to the Pole. But what about the men? Johansen believed there were too few draught animals for such a large party and predicted that Hanssen would be the sole member to accompany the Governor all the way. ‘I won‘t be surprised if we see Hassel and Bjaaland here in a couple of months. Maybe Wisting too,’ he wrote when they left.
The route to the South Pole can be divided into three phases. Initially there is the relatively flat barrier, from about 79° to 85° South. The critical phase follows next: the ascent and crossing of what Amundsen wou

Determined from childhood to become an explorer, Amundsen joined the Belgica Antarctic expedition in - the first to overwinter in the Antarctic. His own expedition six years later was the first to traverse the Northwest Passage; he was the first to reach the South Pole; was involved in an abortive attempt to fly over the Pole; and was hailed as a hero. However, the publication of his biting autobiography revealed him as a ruthless megalomaniac and turned the public against him for a time. But his mysterious and tragic death in - when his plane disappeared during a rescue mission for a colleague - restored his heroic status and it is as this benign hero that he is remembered. Tor Bomann-Larsen explores the drama, humour and adventure of Amundsen's life and reveals the true character of this driven, difficult, cantankerous man who was prepared to do anything to reach his goa
