Rosslynd Piggott
Rosslynd Piggott is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. Her work explores the material thresholds of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, glasswork and installation, enlisting a sophisticated technique and acute sense of colour. Recalling the fragile and ephemeral qualities observable in the natural world, Piggott signals the inner realm of emotion, memory and imagination. Slow and deliberate, her work makes palpable that which lies just beyond our tangible reality.
Her interdisciplinary and process-driven practice generates meditative compositions that consistently evoke metaphysical, spatial and perceptual considerations. The pared-back nature of much of Piggott’s recent aesthetics elicit multi-sensorial phenomena through a seamless invocation of environmental factors such as air and light. Often resistant to discrete categorisation, her unique approach to materiality captures the mutability of paint, sculpture, glass and photography.

Glass is an important material in the experimental work of Australian artist Rosslynd Piggott, born in Melbourne in For three years Piggot worked in Murano in perfect harmony with the maestro Maurizio Vidal, an expert engraver who more than any other has learned the secrets of his art.
Through the series of works Garden Fracture / Mirror in Vapour, viewers “enter” refractive and reflective surfaces to then visually wander in a fantastic garden, captured by a myriad of overlapping rounded lenses superimposed on broken wisteria branches, falling cherry blossom leaves and mature peony flowers.
In this way the ancient art of engraving assumes an unprecedented form of aesthetic expression, in which glass opens a new dialogue between the viewer and the narrator-artist, who has chosen as her theme a poetic interpretation of the world of flowers.

Although Rosslynd Piggott has a high profile in the contemporary Australian art scene, her work is difficult to characterise; meaning in her installations, objects and paintings is elusive and interpretations are ambiguous. Her art is not easily given to verbalisation; it is something that is perceived visually and felt intuitively.
Jane Devery, the curator of this exhibition and the author of the excellent catalogue essay notes that Piggott’s works “have courted the elusive and the ethereal.” From the outset, Piggott’s art has flirted with surrealism and symbolism, she explores a dream-like state, where the process is open-ended – part of a continuum – and the notion of the uncanny is a constant companion.
Yukio Mishima, one of Piggott’s favourite authors, in his novel Spring Snow (), touches on a quality inherent in Piggott’s art. Mishima writes,
