Markgraf Karl Friedrich von Baden war Taufpate von Drais, dessen Familie bei Hofe in hohem Ansehen stand. Nach dem Besuch des Karlsruher Gymnasiums wurde Drais Forstanwärter bei seinem Onkel in Pforzheim. Vor seinem Forstexamen im Jahre studierte er drei Semester Mathematik, Physik und Baukunst an der Universität Heidelberg. wurde er als Forstinspektor dem Forstbezirk Offenburg zugeteilt. Unter dem Einfluss des Großherzogs und auf Ersuchen seines Vaters, des Oberhofrichters Karl Wilhelm Drais beförderte man ihn zum Großherzoglich badischen Forstmeister.
Schon ein Jahr später erhielt Drais bei vollen Bezügen auf unbestimmte Zeit Urlaub und konnte sich ganz seinen Erfindungen widmen. Nach der Beschäftigung mit mathematischen Problemen entwickelte er ein vierrädriges Fahrzeug mit Fußkurbelantrieb. Anlass war die erste von fünf schlechten Ernten im Jahre (gestiegener Haferpreis). After worldwide fame he was prosecuted from age 50 on by the authorities and monarchists for his democratic convictions culminating in an attempted murder. After his death monarchists made him and his invention look silly by starting tall stories in a purposeful manner.

Karl von Drais, a German inventor, was born on April 29, in Karlsruhe, in the family of Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig Drais, a court councilor of Baden.

From to , Karl studied architecture, physics, and agriculture at the University of Heidelberg, founded by Elector Palatine Ruprecht I.
