Biography
One of the leading artists of the Belle Epoque in France and Belgium, Henri Privat Antoine Livemont, known as Privat-Livemont, studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Sint-Josse-ten-Noode before earning a scholarship to complete his training in Paris, where he lived and worked for six years, between and He initially won a commission to work on part of the decoration of the Hôtel de Ville, but soon fell foul of a new law that prohibited non-French artists from working on official civic projects. Nevertheless, he worked in the studio of the scenographer Jean-Baptiste Lavastre, where he created stage designs for a production of Hamlet at the Théâtre Français, where he also worked on the interior decoration of the theatre. On his return to Belgium in he settled in Schaerbeek, in the northern part of Brussels. He received several important commissions, notably the decoration of the provincial government building in the city of Hasselt. Privat-Livemont worked with several architects and designed the interiors of a number of private homes in Brussels, as well as painting murals for a theatre in Ostend. Privat-Livemont’s
William Morris
William Morris is considered as one of the fathers of modern graphic design. Morris, an idealist and a champion of socialist causes, was an artist, designer, printer, typographer, bookbinder, craftsman, poet, and writer. His art was emotional and mythical. He loved country-garden nature and medieval ideals of chivalry as well as the romantic attachment to forests, gardens, flowers and birds. The son of a prosperous banker, Morris was born in London in At Oxford in he became interested in medieval life and art, was stimulated by the poetry of Mrs. Browning and Tennyson, became a friend of Burne-Jones, wrote verse and prose, and was a member of a group called 'The Brotherhood.' He believed that a designer should understand the limits and the possibilities of the media that contain his works. Consequently, he diligently applied himself to learn a wide variety of skills, and technical know-how and apprenticed himself to an architect, and at the same time also practiced several decorative arts, such as woodcarving, illuminating manuscripts, and designing furniture, stained glass and embroidery. I&#;ve featured his Absinthe Robette poster before but am including it again since it&#;s my favourite of the ones I&#;ve seen. All of these are from the Art of the Poster – collection at Lawrence University whose copies can be explored in extreme close-up.

Henri Privat Livemont
Born in Schaerbeek on October 9, and died in the same town on October 4, Privat-Livemont took drawing lessons at the Academy of St Josse-ten-Noode, where he met Paul Saintenoy (Old England), Léon Govaerts and Adolphe Crespin.
Very gifted, Privat-Livemont obtained a scholarship that allowed him to study for six years in Paris, where he decorated prominent public places.
Returning to Brussels in , the Art Nouveau style was then at its height, Henri Privat-Livemont devoted himself entirely to his art, creating posters, interior decorations, sgraffiti and stained glass cartoons.
He will retire in , his graphic style, having no longer evolved, was no longer in tune with the times.
