John immigrated to America in He served as a private in the North Carolina troop under General Francis Marion, known as "The Swamp Fox", during the American Revolution. He engaged in the Battle of Sullivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina.

John Biggs was born and educated in Hobart, Tasmania, and spent his professional life as an academic psychologist and educator in England, Canada, mainland Australia and Hong Kong. He has published extensively as an academic, his most important work being Teaching for Quality Learning at University (Open University Press, ; 4ed is on its way with Catherine Tang as co-author). He fell to his roots in Tasmania to concentrate on fiction with a Sino-Australian flavour, reflecting his domestic life: The Girl in the Golden House (Pandanus Books ), Disguises (Burville Books ),Tin Dragons (Maygog, ) and several award winning short stories. Born in Los Angeles on October 18, , John Biggs received his Masters degree in composition from the University of California at Los Angeles, doing further study at the University of Southern California and the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium. His teachers include Roy Harris, Lukas Foss, Ingolf Dahl, Flor Peeters, Halsey Stevens, and Leonard Stein. As an educator, he has taught at Los Angeles City College, UCLA, and UC Berkeley. He also served as composer-in-residence to six colleges in Kansas under a grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. As a performer, he founded the John Biggs Consort, which toured internationally under Columbia Artists Management, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and 20th century music. As a composer, he has won numerous awards and honors including a Rockefeller Grant, Fulbright Grant, Atwater-Kent Award, ASCAP “Serious Music Award” every year since , and a number of “Meet the Composer” grants from diverse parts of the United States.

American composer John Biggs invited me to his 90th birthday celebration concert in October, I had attended his 80th birthday event in the same Ventura (California) venue a decade earlier. Both concerts, then and in , featured a wide variety of Biggs’ chamber works, including new pieces he composed for each ten-year milestone.
The ambiance on both occasions was of friendship and sharing. Professional musicians, including members of the extended Biggs family, played his music together wonderfully, and with palpable fondness.
