James Dewey Watson
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins
"for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material".
From ornithology to molecular biology
James Dewey Watson was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he grew up and received his early education. He was such a child prodigy that in he appeared on the radio program The Quiz Kids. In , after only two years of high school, he received a scholarship to the University of Chicago's experimental four-year college, where he cultivated his interest in ornithology, stemming from his boyhood interest in bird watching. By , when he received a B.S. in zoology, he had turned to genetics. He enrolled at the University of Indiana, attracted by the geneticist Hermann Muller who was especially known for his work on the physiological and genetic effects of radiation (X-ray mutagenesis), that he had discovered in , and for which he had just been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
At Indiana, Watson was deeply
James Dewey Watson is an American geneticist, molecular biologist, zoologist, and biophysicist. He is known for his decisive work in discovering the molecular structure of DNA, the hereditary material responsible for the transmission of genetic information from one generation to the other. He earned the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick and in In the subsequent years, it has been recognized that James and his colleagues did not attribute their colleague Rosalind Franklin for her contributions to determining the structure of DNA. James Watson, who is the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, is still alive.
James earned degrees at Indiana University and the University of Chicago and completed his post-doctoral education at the University of Copenhagen. He worked at the University of Cambridge and met his collaborator, Francis Cricks. Watson also served in the Harvard University faculty and promoted research in molecular biology. James is also the writer of many books, including the textbook of Molecular Biology of The Gene and The Double Helix. Watson was also associated withNational Institute of Health and helped to make the Hu
James Dewey Watson is born on April 6, in St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. His parents are James D. Watson and Jean Mitchell. When Watson is very young his father takes him to the library every Friday night, sharing his love of books. The two also enjoy bird watching together.
Watson attends Horace Mann Grammar School for 8 years and then goes to South Shore High School for 2 years. At age 15, he receives a scholarship to attend the University of Chicago under their early admissions program where a student can go to college after two years of high school.
When Watson is around 12, he appears on the radio show, Quiz Kids. The listening audience sends in tough questions whose answers are researched for the host. The host asks the panel of 5 highly bright, intelligent kids a question, and they get points for answering correctly.
Watson graduates from the University of Chicago in with a Bachelor's of Science in zoology. His interest in birds at a young age has led to an interest in genetics. He goes to Indiana University where he receives a doctorate in

James Dewey Watson (born April 6, ) is an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist. In , he co-authored with Francis Crick the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNAmolecule. Watson, Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material".
Watson earned degrees at the University of Chicago (BS, ) and Indiana University (PhD, ). Following a post-doctoral year at the University of Copenhagen with Herman Kalckar and Ole Maaløe, Watson worked at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory in England, where he first met his future collaborator Francis Crick. From to , Watson was on the faculty of the Harvard University Biology Department, promoting research in molecular biology.
From , Watson served as director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), greatly expanding its level of funding and research. At CSHL, he shifted his research emphasis to the study of cancer, along with making it a world-leading research center in molecular biology. I
