Christopher Columbus, known as Cristoforo Colombo in his native Italy, was a pivotal figure in the Age of Exploration. Born around in Genoa, Italy, he developed a passion for sailing and mapmaking early in life, which led him to embark on an ambitious quest to find a new trade route to Asia by sailing westward across the Atlantic Ocean. In , with the backing of the Spanish monarchy, Columbus set sail from Spain with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña.
