Came to read about Picasso's art; got a lesson in the author's political opinions. Modern biographers can't stop inserting themselves and their opinions into the lives of the people they write about.
I was interested in Picasso's art and if necessary, Picasso's political opinions, if they informed me about his art. Picasso turned Communist in the s, at the same time Stalin was murdering thousands of his own countrymen in communist Russia, so should I respect Picasso's political opinions? He was a great artist, not a political thinker. He sympathized with the poor, but, like most artists, he was easily led into easy-sounding solutions to complicated problems he knew nothing about. Most artists have political opinions, but few know what they are talking about. Picasso was definitely not a proletarian, he grew up in an upper-middle-class family, hung out with the sons of the well-to-do, sponged off the rich, wore nice clothes and carried a cane, bought himself out of the draft and was extremely tight with his money all his life.

From to , John Richardson lived near Picasso in France and was a friend of the artist. With a view to writing a biography, the acclaimed art historian kept a diary of their meetings. After Picasso's death, his widow Jacqueline collaborated in the preparation of this work, giving Richardson access to Picasso's studio and papers.
Volume one of this extraordinary biography establishes the complexity of Picasso's Spanish roots; his aversion to his native Malaga and his passion for Barcelona and Catalan "modernisme". Richardson introduces new material on the artist's early training in religious art; re-examines old legends to provide fresh insights into the artistic failures of Picasso's father as an impetus to his sons's triumphs; and includes portraits of Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Gertrude Stein, who made up "The Picasso Gang" in Paris during the "Blue" and "Rose" periods.

Olivier Widmaier Picasso on living under the shadow of his grandfather
It is Wednesday morning in New York. Later today Olivier Widmaier Picasso will fly to Edinburgh for an appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Yesterday he went and sat in the Museum of Modern Art and watched the people coming to look at one of his grandfather’s most famous paintings, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, painted more than a century ago but still holding a huge pull for art lovers.
Indeed, it is hard to think of another name in modern art that is more resonant than Picasso. Between and next year there will be 42 exhibitions mounted of his work. And that’s just in Europe. He is the benchmark for the art market. Quite frankly, Picasso is modern art.
But what did that mean for those who share his surname? Those who grew up in the shadow of his legend?
Widmaier Picasso, a TV producer in his day job, has written a book, Picasso An Intimate Portrait that attempts to answer those questions. In it, he talks about Picasso the artist, his political beliefs and his financial dealings. But at heart it is the story of Picasso and the women he loved and the families (plural) he created. In
