The Montgolfier brothers were eighteenth-century French businessmen who enjoyed conducting scientific experiments in their spare time. Becoming interested in the age-old dream of flying, they discovered an important aeronautical principle involving balloons and in were responsible for the first human flight in history. Since they worked closely together on this project and since neither accomplished anything else particularly noteworthy, their biographies are always combined.
Joseph and Étienne were the twelfth and fifteenth children of Pierre Montgolfier (), a wealthy paper manufacturer whose factories were located near Lyon in southern France. Joseph was largely self-educated. He tried the paper manufacturing business but had little success. He was shy and extraordinarily absent-minded, two qualities that hampered his career. He was, however, very interested in technological advances. The device, invented by French brothers Joseph-Michael and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier, allowed humans for the first time to view the world from a bird’s perspective and helped inspire subsequent interest in the developing field of aviation.
The brothers were born in Annonay, France: Joseph-Michael, on August 26, ; Jacques-Ètienne on January 6, They were two of 16 children born to Pierre Montgolfier, a successful paper manufacturer with factories in southern France. Joseph became intrigued with the idea of building a balloon in the s and began experimenting with a bag he made out of paper from his father’s factory, filling it first with steam to see if it would stay aloft. Montgolfier Brothers, namely Joseph-Michel Montgolfier ( - ) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier ( - ) were the inventors of the first hot air balloon that safely carried people into the sky and back to earth.
They were children of Pierre Montgolfier, paper manufacturer in Annonay, France, and Anne Duret who had sixteen children. Joseph was the 12th child while Étienne was the 15th. Joseph was a dreamer, and impractical in terms of business and personal affairs - real features of an inventor. His brother, on the other hand, Étienne had more of a knack for business but because he was a trouble to his elder siblings, he was sent to Paris to train as an architect. When their father died in , Étienne was recalled to Annonay to run the family business which he improved in the next 10 years.
