Brilliant but mercurial, Ludendorff possessed one of the best tactical minds of World War I. When coupled with the steadying influence of Paul von Hindenburg, they constituted a formidable offensive team. However, Ludendorff proved stubborn and shortsighted in a strategic sense, and his policies actually hastened Germany’s defeat in World War I.
Erich von Ludendorff was born in Kruszevnia, East Prussia (modern-day Poland), on April 9, , the son of middle-class parents. 6. August: Sechs Tage nach Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs und drei Tage nach dem Einmarsch der deutschen Truppen in Belgien besetzt Ludendorff mit einer Brigade die Zitadelle in Lüttich. Er wird dafür mit dem Kriegsorden Pour le Mérite ausgezeichnet.
September: Ludendorff wird zum Chef des Generalstabs der 8. Armee berufen. Sein Vorgesetzter ist General Paul von Hindenburg.
August: Schlacht bei Tannenberg, in der die 2. Russische Armee vernichtend geschlagen wird.
September: Die Schlacht an den Masurischen Seen endet mit dem Sieg über die 1. Russische Armee.

Wer war Erich Ludendorff?
Erich Ludendorff übernahm als General im Ersten Weltkrieg zusammen mit Paul von Hindenburg die Oberste Heeresleitung. Auf die deutsche Kriegsführung nahm er so entscheidenden Einfluss.
In der Zeit der Weimarer Republik beteiligte er sich am Hitler-Putsch Er gehörte der völkischen Bewegung an und war nationalistisch und antisemitisch gesinnt.
Herkunft und militärische Karriere
Erich Ludendorff wurde in Posen auf einem Rittergut geboren. Seine militärische Karriere begann er als Leutnant. wurde er Major, Oberstleutnant, Oberst, Generalmajor. Im August wurde er nach Ostpreußen gerufen.
Als Stabschef von Paul von Hindenburg war Erich Ludendorff als strategischer Kopf an den Siegen in der Tannenbergschlacht und der Masurenschlacht gegen die russischen Truppen maßgeblich beteiligt. Im Dezember wurde er zum Generalleutnant befördert. In den nächsten Jahren blieb er Stabschef bei Generalfeldmarschall Hindenburg.

Born in Kruszczewina (Posen), W. Prussia, 9 April to a family of small businessmen, Ludendorff chose a military career. He received his commission in at age 17, serving in the usual assignments and completing training for the general staff. In came the call to Berlin to serve on the Great General Staff. He worked in section II, responsible for deployment and mobilization plans. In he became head of the section, the most prestigious position excepting the Chief of the General Staff.
Having an excitable and highly strung temperament, the strong-willed Ludendorff proved a difficult subordinate. Charged with refining and improving the Schlieffen Plan in the years before the war, he became convinced that Germany lacked the trained manpower to defeat the French in a rapid campaign. Ludendorff insisted that the government raise additional forces. When this suggestion met disapproval, he by-passed his superiors and initiated contact with politicians in an effort to influence the budget. That the German political system could not bear the cost of additional units was something he never considered. To him, it was a matter of will. The response was a transfer to a regiment
