Lawren Stewart Harris (October 23, � January 29, ) was a Canadian painter born in Brantford, Ontario, who was one of the best known landscape painters of the Group of Seven, a group of artists who set out to create a distinctly Canadian art. He pioneered a distinctly Canadian painting style in the early twentieth century.
Lawren Harris was born into a wealthy family on October 23rd He was the first born of two sons. He attended St. Andrew's College in Toronto, and then from age 19 ( to ) he studied in Berlin. He was interested in philosophy and eastern thought. Later, he became involved in Theosophy and joined the Toronto Lodge of the International Theosophical Society.
In his youth Lawren Harris moved to Toronto, Ontario. He first studied art in Berlin, Germany, from to He then returned to Toronto, where he began painting post-impressionist street scenes of the older and poorer areas of Toronto.

Harris was the son of Thomas Harris and Anne Stewart, and despite his frequent illnesses, he enjoyed a happy childhood. His love for drawing and painting emerged early, as he spent his convalescence creating Christmas cards for his family and sketching the homes in his neighborhood with his friend William Davidson. His artistic inclinations were nurtured during his time at St. Andrew's College in Toronto, where he excelled in sports, indulged in mischief, and filled his notebooks with illustrations. Recognizing his talent, his professor at the University of Toronto advised his mother to send him to Europe for formal art training.

This artwork represents Mount Ishbel, a mountain peak in Canada. It is visible on the horizon and recognizable by the distinctive tilted strata of gray sedimentary rock. The hard material of the mountain is transfigured in an almost metaphysical vision. It almost entirely occupies the space of the canvas, capturing attention without accessory elements that can distract the look.
The painter filled a large painting with cold colors, from white to ice, to violet, to green, to petrol green: Harris was not satisfied with the spot colors, he succeeded in elaborating a chromatic range made of many shades. The colors chase each other on the canvas, from the dark to the light of the top of the mountain, and draw the gaze towards the top of the hill. Harris is one of Canada's most important and influential landscape artists. Infusing his paintings with a deep sense of spirituality, he emerged as a principal figure in the formation of the Group of Seven, a movement that brought the northern Canadian landscape to the attention of the international artworld for the first time. Harris's painting style passed through three phases: from an Impressionistic, picturesque, style, through stark, elegantly minimalist, compositions, to a purely abstract art. But it is for the middle phase of his career that he remains most celebrated. These evocative scenes of isolated peaks, and vast expanses of land, water, and sky, are today considered some of the most important images in twentieth-century Canadian art. Harris was a true patriot, and even a scandalous love affair that saw him exiled in America has not distracted from his contribution to Canada's cultural identity.
