HILARIO DURAN TORRES (pianist, bandleader, composer, producer, arranger) was born October 10, in Havana, Cuba, where he later studied music education at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan there. He joined the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music in , but when Arturo Sandoval formed his band in , Hilario joined him and continued to work with him for the next decade as composer, arranger, and producer as well as playing both piano and keyboard. It was a collaboration that saw him often sharing international stages with outstanding musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand.
Known as one of the great Çuban pianists, Duran has been nicknamed “Con Tumbao” for his creative use of the tumbao repetitive bass figures. He toured throughout Latin America and Europe with his own group, Perspectiva, for several years, a period during which he also played piano on Jane Bunnett’s Juno Award-winning Spirits of Havana CD. In , he decided to pursue a solo career, releasing the first of many successful recordings the following year.

One of Hilario's major creative partners has been dynamic Cuban trumpet player, Arturo Sandoval. In , Sandoval formed his own group. Hilario was an integral part of this dynamic ensemble, acting as composer, arranger and producer, as well as playing both piano and electric keyboard. This popular and innovative group performed at major international jazz festivals and venues for more than a decade - sharing stages with legendary musicians such as the late Dizzy Gillespie and composer/arranger Michel Legrand.
In , Hilario felt that it was time to form his own group, aptly titled "Perspectiva". The musically innovative ensemble performed to packed and enthusiastic crowds throughout Latin America and Europe. In addition, "Perspectiva" released two critically-acclaimed CDs, Tiembla Tierra and Buscando Cuerdas. A year later, Hilario made another creative connection that has brought him to international attention. As a member of Canadian multi-saxophonist Jane Bunnett's "Spirits of Havana", he performed in concert, and on the recording of the same name - which subsequently won the Juno Award for Best Latin Jazz Recording. MARY JANE (JANE) BUNNETT (soprano saxophonist, flutist, piccolo-player, bandleader, composer) was born on October 22, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She began her early musical training in piano at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, but after three years, and achievement of Grade 10 piano credentials, she developed tendonitis which forced her decision to switch to woodwinds studies.
Inspired by her first exposure to jazz greats Charles Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk in San Francisco, she began concurrent studies in jazz at York University in Toronto in Further studies followed with pianist Barry Harris and flutists James Moody, James Newton, and Frank Wess, later also focusing on the soprano saxophone after hearing Steve Lacy. A Canada Council grant enabled her to travel to Paris to live and study with Lacy.
Bunnett has become indisputably one of the foremost jazz musicians in Canada, and has gained recognition all over the world for her improvising talents, skilled technical proficiency, and writing and band leading abilities.
