Career

By the time he opened his own furniture workshop in , Rietveld had taught himself drawing, painting and model-making. He afterwards set up in business as a cabinet-maker. Rietveld designed his Red and Blue Chair in , which has become an iconic piece of modern furniture. Hoping that much of his furniture would eventually be mass-produced rather than handcrafted, Rietveld aimed for simplicity in construction. In , he started his own furniture factory and changed the chair's colours after becoming influenced by the De Stijl movement, of which he became a member in , the same year in which he became an architect.

 

Rietveld broke with De Stijl in and became associated with a more functionalist style of architecture, known as either Nieuwe Zakelijkheid or Nieuwe Bouwen. The same year he joined the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne. From the late s he was concerned with social housing, inexpensive production methods, new materials, prefabrication and standardisation. Begeer from to Then, Rietveld&#;s career as an independent architect began in , the same year as his entrance in the De Stijl movement, which advocates for geometric abstractism as a means towards harmony and balance. In , he began a period of collaboration with the designer and Dutch socialite Truus Schröder-Schräde, and they created the Rietveld Schröder House. By the s, Rietveld&#;s fame seemed to have passed, but with renewed interest in De Stijl due to production following World War II, he began receiving important commissions once more. Rietveld died on June 25, , in Utrecht.

Born in Utrecht in , the Dutch designer, architect and painter Gerrit Rietveld spent his entire life in the city of his birth. The son of a carpenter, Gerrit Rietveld was employed in his father's workshop until he was fifteen. Until Gerrit Rietveld was employed as a draftsman in the workshop of the goldsmith C.J.A. Begeer. From , Gerrit Rietveld also attended evening courses, where he learned technical draftsmanship from the architect P.J.C. Klaarhamer.
In Gerrit Rietveld was a member of the group of artists known as Kunstliefde, with whom he also showed work. In Gerrit Rietveld established a furniture workshop in Utrecht. By , however, Gerrit Rietveld had joined Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, and other artists to found "De Stijl"; Rietveld would become one of the most important and influential artists in that celebrated group.
