If we were asked what makes a film great, most of us would be tempted to say: money, an experienced director, and world-class cast. Benh Zeitlin’s masterpieceBeasts of the Southern Wild managed to prove us wrong. He proved that a young director (30 years of age) can touch the audience with a sincere and powerful film. He also debunked the myth that only money means a great film, or rather – the lack of it means low quality. And, finally, he picked his cast from non-professionals, who had not even dreamt of starring in films. Yet their performance was perhaps the most memorable feature of Zeitlin's creation.

Benh Zeitlin was born in Queens, New York, on October 14, , to Steve Zeitlin and Amanda Dargan. His parents are the founders of City Lore, a non-profit center for urban culture. Early life
Zeitlin was born in Manhattan and raised in Sunnyside, Queens, New York, and in suburban Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. He is a graduate of Hastings High School and Wesleyan University. He was born to writers and folklorists Mary Amanda Dargan and Steven Joel Zeitlin, who founded the NYC non-profit cultural organization City Lore. His father, who is Jewish, spent most of his childhood in Brazil; his mother comes from a rural, Protestant background in Darlington, South Carolina. His younger sister is screenwriter and artist Eliza Zeitlin.

Biography of Benh Zeitlin
Benh Zeitlin, whose full name is Benjamin Harold Zeitlin, is an independent American screenwriter and director. He is the leader of the well-known group "Court 13", which is dedicated to making independent low-budget films. Unlike many other directors, Benh believes in the importance of the atmosphere and efforts made by the film crew during production, and thus, he rarely uses special effects or computer technology.
Early Life
Born on October 14, , in a suburb of New York City, Benh grew up in a creative family. His father, Steve Zeitlin, was a Jewish folklorist who turned his collection into the largest folklore center in New York City called "City Lore: the New York Center for Urban Culture".
