Alex acuna biography

Born in Pativilca, Peru, miles north of Lima, Alex Acuña was born into a musical family that inspired him and helped shape him as a musician. His father and five brothers were all musicians. Alex taught himself how to play the drums from the age of four. By the time Alex turned ten, he was already playing in local bands. As a teenager, he moved to Lima and became one of Peru's most accomplished session drummers, performing on many recording projects for artists, as well as film and television productions.

In Lima, Alex also earned a glowing reputation for his live performances. So much so, that at the age of eighteen, Alex was chosen by the great Latin band leader, Perez Prado, to join his big band. It was with the Prado band that Alex first traveled to the United States. In , Alex moved to Puerto Rico to work as a studio musician and play locally. During this period, he also studied for three years at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, playing as a classical percussionist with the Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the famed Spanish cellist master Pablo Casals.

Born in Peru to a family of musicians Alex Acuña joined the great Perez Prado's big band at eighteen. He later played with such diverse luminaries as Elvis Presley and Diana Ross, until he joined the groundbreaking jazz group Weather Report. Since then he has recorded with countless artists including Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston, U2, Paul McCartney, Ella Fitzgerald, Sergio Mendes, Yellow Jackets, Chick Corea, Julio Iglesias, Koinonia, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel and Herbie Hanckock, to name a few. In Acuña was nominated for a Grammy in for his album Alex Acuña y Su Acuarela de Tambores 'Rhythms for a New Millenium'.

Alejandro Neciosup Acuna, also known as Alex Acuna, is a Peruvian AfroCuban jazz drummer and composer. He was born December 12, Acuna was born in Pativilca (Peru) and played in local bands until he was ten years old. He moved to Lima when he was a teenager. He joined Perez Prado at the age of 18 and moved to Puerto Rico in Acuna was a member of the band Perez Prado in Las Vegas from to work with Diana Ross and Elvis Presley. The following year, he joined Weather Report jazz-fusion group Weather Report and appeared on the albums Black Market, Heavy Weather. Acuna quit Weather Report in and began working as a session musician in California. He recorded and played live with Chick Corea and Ella Fitzgerald. His Weather Report bandmates Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and Sam Phillips were also there. You can find him on recordings by artists as diverse as Johnny Clegg and Peter Gabriel.
