The installation shown below is called “Theater of the World” done by Huang Yongping in The installation includes two main structures: first the arching metal frame that bridges over the second structure, a wooden four legged table with a transparent octagonal wire mesh cage on top of it (Jiang Zhi, “”, ). In the original piece the bridging structure housed snakes and turtles together, while the cage below was equipped with heating lamps, and housed live spiders, scorpions, crickets, cockroaches, black beetles, stick insects, centipedes, lizards, toads, and snakes (“”, ). Naturally housing all of these different species together led to some of them eating one another. This led to international outrage as animal rights activists gathered over , signatures to remove the work, and were actively protesting before the works installation in New York threatening violent retaliation if installment was not halted (“”, ). Huang Yong Ping was a contemporary artist, born and raised in Xiamen, China. In the last decades, he has created numerous contentious and confrontational artworks. Huang is known as one of the most influential Chinese contemporary artists.
His artworks include sculptures, installations, and paintings. He was an icon in the art world because of the provocative, surreal, and animalistic works that he has made since the s. His opus can be categorized into four periods: anti-artistic affection, anti-self-expression, anti-art, and anti-history.
Moving to France Accolades
Huang attended the Art School in Hangzhou and graduated in Some of his earliest artworks were inspired by the likes of John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, and Joseph Beuys1. A few years after his graduation, he formed Xiamen Dada2.
A few years after this, Huang migrated to France and has been living there ever since. In , he was Frances trusted artist to represent the country in the Venice Biennale. His impressive piece Empires3 was selected for the Monumenta Biennial exposition in Grand Palais in Paris.
