Remembering influential Cypriot composer, Manos Loizos
Manos Loizos was considered one of the most iconic Cypriot composers of his time. He composed for many famous Greek artists such as Haris Alexiou, George Dalaras and Mikis Theodorakis.
Early Life:
Manos Loizos was born on October 22, in the village of Agioi Vavatsinias in the province of Larnaca. He was the only child of Andreas Loizos and Despina Manaki, the daughter of an agronomist from Rhodes.
At the age of seven, his family moved to Alexandria, Egypt in search of better fortune. He enrolled in the National Conservatory of Alexandria and started learning the violin, but ended up playing the guitar.
After graduating from the Averofio High School of Alexandria in , he relocated to Athens and enrolled first in the School of Pharmacy and then in the School of Economics and Business.
In , he dropped his studies and began to pursue a career in music.

In the spring of , Mikis Theodorakis employed Loizos as the choir conductor of the Society of Friends of Greek Music for the staging of &#;Beautiful City.&#;

Ο Μάνος (Εμμανουήλ) Λοΐζος ήταν κυπριακής καταγωγής μουσικοσυνθέτης, με σπουδαία προσφορά στο έντεχνο λαϊκό τραγούδι. Γεννήθηκε στις 22 Οκτωβρίου στο χωριό Άγιοι Βαβατσινιάς της επαρχίας Λάρνακας και ήταν το μοναδικό παιδί του Ανδρέα Λοΐζου και της Δέσποινας Μανάκη, κόρης γεωπόνου από τη Ρόδο.
Η οικογένειά του μετακόμισε στην Αλεξάνδρεια της Αιγύπτου προς αναζήτηση καλύτερης τύχης, όταν ο Μάνος ήταν επτά ετών. Με τη μουσική ασχολήθηκε από τα μαθητικά του χρόνια. Γράφτηκε σε τοπικό Ωδείο και άρχισε να μαθαίνει βιολί, αλλά κατέληξε στην κιθάρα. Μετά την αποφοίτησή του από το Αβερώφειο Γυμνάσιο της Αλεξάνδρειας το ήλθε στην Αθήνα και γράφτηκε αρχικά στη Φαρμακευτική Σχολή και στη συνέχεια στην ΑΣΟΕΕ. Στις αρχές του ήλθε η μεγάλη στροφή στη ζωή του, όταν αποφάσισε να εγκαταλείψει τις σπουδές του και να ασχοληθεί αποκλειστικά με τη μουσική.
Για να επιβιώσει κάνει διάφορες δουλειές, από γκαρσόνι σε ταβέρνα μέχρι γραφίστας και διακοσμητής. Το έρχεται σε επαφή με τον Μίμη Πλέσσα, ο οποίος μεσολαβεί στη «Φίλιπς» για την ηχογράφηση του πρώτου του τραγουδιού. His father, Andreas Loizou, had origins in a Cypriot village near Larnaka and his mother was Rhodian. At the age of 7, Loizos took his first lessons in violin at the National Conservatory of Alexandria. After graduating from the Averofio School in Alexandria in , he relocated to Athens to pursue his studies.
He was enrolled in the Pharmacology School of the University of Athens. However, he quit in and started following courses at the School of Economics and Business. During a short time, he also joined the Vakalo Art & Design College to study painting. In , he dropped his studies and worked in several jobs. He was an active member of the Greek Communist Party. In spring of , Mikis Theodorakis employed Loizos as the choir conductor of the Society of Friends of Greek Music for the staging of Beautiful City.
