PROFILE OF PROFESSOR FLORENCE ABENA DOLPHYNE

Professor Florence Abena Dolphyne holds a PhD in Phonetics and Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She obtained her first degree, a BA Honours in English, from the University College of Ghana (now University of Ghana) in

She began her career as a Lecturer at the University of Ghana in She rose through the ranks and earned the status of Professor of Linguistics in During this period, she became the first female Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University. Earlier, she served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Head of the Department of Linguistics. She served on the University of Ghana Council and was the Hall Warden of Volta Hall. Altogether, she served the University of Ghana for 36 years, from to The last three years were her post-retirement service.

Professor Dolphyne held visiting scholar positions in other universities. These include University of Ibadan, Nigeria; Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone; Michigan State University, and University of California, Los Angeles

A ceremony has been held at the University of Ghana to honour Professor Florence Abena Dolphyne, a retired professor of Linguistics. The ceremony highlighted her sterling contributions to the Linguistics Department in particular and the University of Ghana in general.

Speaking at the event, the Dean of the School of Languages and co-convener of the conference Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo mentioned the significant contributions made by the celebrant towards the establishment of the Linguistics Department. She described Professor Florence Abena Dolphyne as an inspiring teacher and tenacious mentor who has impacted the lives of several individuals including herself.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Samuel Agyei Mensah who spoke at the event asserted that the celebrant was a renowned scholar in other fields besides Linguistics. He also commended Professor Dolphyne’s calm disposition and demeanor and flaunted her as a model for the younger generations to emulate.
