Explained: Why The Chinese Communist Party Has Expelled Two Former Defence Ministers
In an unprecedented move, China announced the expulsion of two disgraced former Defence Ministers of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), General Wei Fenghe and his successor Li Shangfu.
This follows the abrupt dismissal of Shangfu from the post of Defence Minister after a short stint of just seven months. He succeeded Wei Fenghe who served from till
Similarly, Qin Gang, China's shortest-serving foreign minister, was also removed.
This was announced in a high-profile member meeting of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) held on Thursday (28 June).
These expulsions come as part of the so-called anti-corruption drive of Chinese President Xi Jinping where several of the high-ranking officers of the PLA, the foreign ministry, and even the highly strategic Rocket Force (PLARF) were removed from their positions on account of corruption and bribery.
According to reports, in the inquiry against Shangfu held by the Chinese Military Commission (CMC), it was found that Shangfu accepted gifts and large sums of money in exchange for favours, apart from giving bribes himself.

In another high-level corruption saga within the Chinese military, former Chinese Defence Ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe were officially expelled from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the military on 27 June. They have since been transferred to the military procuratorate for prosecution.
This follows the dismissal in and of Xu Caihou and Guo Boxiong, former members of the Politburo and former vice-chairmen of the Central Military Commission (CMC).
The general consensus is that since Xi Jinping became the CCP’s top leader in , he has prioritised anti-corruption efforts to clean up his party and the army, and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has achieved significant anti-corruption outcomes and noticeably improved its discipline.
However, the removal of Li and Wei, as well as the investigation and punishment of more than ten PLA generals over the last year, including five full generals, underscore the persistent and entrenched nature of corruption within the PLA. This indicates that there is still a long way to go to fight corruption.

China has expelled two former defense ministers, Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, from the ruling Communist Party amid allegations of corruption, which could result in life imprisonment, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday.
The Defense Ministry announced Thursday that Li abused his authority for personal enrichment through bribery, while his predecessor, Wei, faced similar charges.
President Xi Jinping, who also heads the armed forces as chairman of the Central Military Commission, has made combating corruption a central tenet of his administration. This latest action underscores his ongoing efforts to clean up the military leadership. Li's investigation for corruption and bribery follows his removal from office in October after a two-month disappearance.
"He sought improper benefits in personnel arrangements for himself and others, took advantage of his posts to seek benefits for others, and accepted a huge amount of money and valuables in return," reported Xinhua News Agency.
The ministry's statement provided limited details about the allegations against Li, only noting that his crimes posed "an enormous danger." Li, a specialist in missile and procurement branch
CPC expels former Chinese defense minister Wei Fenghe
BEIJING -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) leadership on Thursday decided to expel former defense minister Wei Fenghe from the Party for serious violation of Party discipline and the law.
Wei, who also formerly served as a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and a state councilor, was deprived of his qualification as a delegate to the 20th CPC National Congress, according to a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
The CMC's disciplinary and supervisory agency launched an investigation against Wei on Sept 21,
According to the investigation results, Wei seriously violated political and organizational discipline by helping others gain improper benefits in personnel arrangements. He also seriously violated discipline regarding integrity, accepting money and gifts in violation of relevant rules.
Wei took advantage of his posts to seek benefits for others, accepting a huge amount of money and valuables in return, constituting the suspected crime of taking bribes.
The investigation also found clues about Wei's other violations.
