Germaine Tailleferre is a composer who often flies under the radar for a number of reasons. She was a woman, and women composers have historically faced a harsher battle for recognition. She was part of a larger group of composers known as Les Six, and sometimes she’s remembered more for her friendships with her colleagues than for her work itself. Her music tends to be lighter, which many people wrongly assume makes it somehow less important. And she was famously modest and not prone to promoting herself.

1. She changed her name because her father refused to support her musical career. She was born 19 April in a suburb southeast of Paris. She showed an early fascination with music, but her father was dead set against her ever pursuing a career in the field, fuming that professional women musicians were akin to prostitutes. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire in but was forced to attend a convent school by her father. It was years before she was allowed to return to the Conservatoire. In retaliation, she abandoned her father’s name of Taille

The composer Germaine Tailleferre () played the piano and organ, taught and also painted. Thanks to her father’s opposition to her musical education, she changed her name early on from ‘Taillefesse’ to ‘Tailleferre’. Her mother gave her lessons and she studied secretly at the Paris Conservatoire. Her father allowed her to study only when he saw her name in the newspaper, but on condition that she finance herself. For many years, she wavered between music and painting; she numbered Pablo Picasso among her acquaintances. 

Her first marriage to the American caricaturist Ralph Barton in ended in divorce four years later. She married a French lawyer Jean Lageat in ; his tuberculosis caused her to spend much of the s in a sanatorium. Like Nadia Boulanger, she was based in France but had a close professional relationship with the USA, spending in that country. Thereafter she enjoyed a long and successful career in France.

Tailleferre undertook many recital tours accompanying singers; for example, as the Duo Lefort-Tailleferre (with the baritone Bernard Lefort) she did over concerts in the early to mids, championing French contemporary song.

Early Life And Education

Germaine Tailleferre was born 19th April , to Arthur and Marie Taillefesse. She was born in France, in suburban Paris. Her mother was in love with a man that her father didn’t approve of, and he forced Tailleferre’s mother into a marriage with Arthur Taillefesse. The marriage was a very unhappy one.

Germaine Tailleferre studied piano at home with her mother and was soon composing her own short works. She then began formal study at the Paris Conservatory. It was around this time that she changed her name, due to her father’s indifference to her musical studies.

, Germaine Tailleferre was asked to join Nouveaux Jeunes. This was a group of young composers. They wrote a series of short works for Caroline Tardieu, who was Assistant Professor of Harp at the Conservatory. The group became known as the Les Six.




Career

Germaine Tailleferre immersed herself in the artistic districts of Montparnasse and Montmartre in Paris. Les Six became very well-known, and being the only female member, Tailleferre even more so.
