Sohei Nishino, reinventing carthography for the modern world

“Cities amplify themselves, repeatedly. They emerge and disappear while they continue to integrate themselves”.It’s this consideration that motivated Japanese photographer Sohei Nishino to start his journeys from place to place and create his impressive panoramic series, made of thousands of photographs combined, half way between a map and a ’s experience is not just a mere transposition of topography into collage, Nishino exacerbates the concept of topographic mapping, extending it to different aspects of the existent, to the experience of men in space and in time, integrating his personal point of view.
In making his urban panoramas he doesn’t differ much from the modus operandi of ancient cartography – Sohei himself admits being influenced by the observations made at the beginning of the 19th century by Japanese cartographer Inō Tadatakaand considers them the frame of reference for the beginning of his artistic research. Nishino began working on his series Diorama Map following his graduation from Osaka University of the Arts in His projects to date reflect a particular attention to recording and visualizing the experience of space. Using a lengthy process of walking, photographing, and collaging, Nishino creates landscape images that represent his memories of moving through locations, rather than indexical records of the places themselves. He has mapped cities throughout Japan, including Tokyo in and , as well as New York, London, Shanghai, and Rio de Janeiro. Learn more about his work.

写真家・西野壮平氏と取り組んだプロジェクト、「TYPE-VI Sohei Nishino project」。
歩くこと、旅を通して得た個人的体験をもとに作品を制作している、⻄野氏。代表作である「Diorama Map」シリーズより、「Tokyo 」と「Kyoto」の二つの作品を、A-POC ABLE独自の高度なジャカード織り技術により、衣服として再構築しました。
「Diorama Map」シリーズは、⻄野氏自身が特定の街を歩きながら、さまざまな対象をカメラに映し、撮影したすべての写真をその都市の地図に即しながら、写真を一枚一枚キャンバス上に貼り合わせ、記憶を再構築していくことで、都市が垣間見せる“現在”の姿をイメージ化しています。また、“反復”として、一定の期間をもって定点的に同じ都市を見ることで、構造としての変化と、自身の都市への呼応の仕方やコミュニケーションの変化を見る試みでもあります。(東京は年に制作され、年に再び制作されました。) そうして出来上がった作品は、「一人の人間が街をどのように見て歩いたか」という記憶の痕跡と認識の表れであると共に、生命力を持ったエネルギーの縮図としての都市の姿です。

この度A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE の新たなプロジェクトにお誘いいただきとても光栄です。
初期段階から、私の写真作品がどのように服として生まれていくのかといったところが非常に興味がありました。
チームの皆さんと共に一つ一つの想いをまさに編み込んでいくように作り上げていく過程には多くの驚きがあったと同時に、自分自身の作品をまた新たな角度から再発見させてくれました。
一枚の布の中にある様々な記憶の集積を楽しんでいただけたら嬉しいです。
