King Richard III () was a member of the House of Plantagenet. He became the third King of the Yorkist branch of the Plantagenets after it was revealed that his nephew, King Edward V was illegitimate. His place on the throne was challenged by Henry Tudor and he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in

King Richard III
Richard III is perhaps most well-known now due to the discovery of his remains in a car park in Leicester.
He was however an important figure in England’s medieval monarchy: brother to Edward IV, he usurped his own nephew, Edward V and took the crown as his own, only to be killed two years later at the Battle of Bosworth, bringing an end to the infamous dynastic battle known as the War of the Roses.
His death marked a significant milestone for the monarchy, the last in a long line of king’s fighting for the House of York.
Born in October at Fotheringhay Castle, he was the eleventh child of Richard, Duke of York, and his wife, Cecily Neville.
As a child he fell under the influence of his cousin, the Earl of Warwick who would guide and tutor him in his training as a knight. The earl would later become known as “the Kingmaker” for his involvement in the power struggles emerging out of the War of the Roses.
Meanwhile, his father and his elder brother, Edmund had been killed at the Battle of Wakefield in December , leaving Richard and his other brother George to be sent away to the continent.
As the War of the Roses initiated changing fortunes for both the
Richard III, the last king of the House of York and the Plantaganet dynasty, ruled England from to Perhaps better known by his characterisation as a dark and twisted tyrant in Shakespeares eponymous play, Richards reputation is controversial; yet many contemporary sources praise his character and rule. The death of Richard III also marked the end of medieval England.

1. Richard was born in Fotheringhay Castle on 2 October
His parents were Richard Plantagenet and Cecily Neville. Richard Plantagenet was descended from Edward III both on his fathers side (great-grandson) and his mothers side (great-great-great-grandson). During the mental breakdown of Henry VI, he served as Lord Protector of England.
2. Richard was the 12th of 13 children
Richard was part of a big family. Among his siblings was the future King Edward IV and George Plantagenet who would later become the Duke of Clarence and engage in several conspiracies against Edward.
