One night I dreamed I was walking
along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed that
during the low periods of my life, when I was
suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,&#;You promised me
Lord, that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods
of my life there have only been
one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?&#;

The Lord replied,
&#;The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints,
is when I carried you.&#;

Mary Stevenson lived the message in her poem she wrote in the early s. After losing her mother and the brother she was close to while she was still an impetuous little girl, Mary's troubles with her strict, demanding father increased. She married to escape her home life, then fled again to save herself and her child from abuse and near-starvation from a husband who kept her prisoner in their apartment.

Through it all, the Lord's love reached out to her, carrying her when her load was too heavy. And in the end, her example of spiritual and personal triumph, like her poem, is an inspiring story of renewal.

When the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life
there was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life.

This really bothered me
and I questioned the Lord about it:
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why
when I need you most you would leave me."

The Lord replied:
"My precious child, I love you and would
never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints, it was then
that I carried you."

Over the last couple of days this poem has come back into my mind on many occasions, I first come across it some months ago, I enjoyed it when I first read through it, but couldn’t really connect with it at that point, now it has become the story of my last few weeks, when my strength to struggle through all but disappeared, He certainly carried me.
