Photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist, Karl Blossfeldt () is best known for his magnified, sharply defined and detailed images of plants and flowers published in two famous texts, Urformen der Kunst (Forms in Art) () and Wundergarten der Natur (The Magic Garden of Nature) (). He believed that pure, organic forms found in nature could be the source for a new, modern art. For a period of over 30 years, Blossfeldt made thousands of enlargements of plant details, in an attempt to reveal the fundamental structures of the plant world. Blossfeldt’s flowers, removed from their natural habitat and photographed against neutral backgrounds, are at once reminiscent of architectural designs and nineteenth century botanical illustrations. Blossfeldt’s work is significant because it served as an important bridge between the notion of photography as science and its acceptance as a fine art, making him a celebrated artist in the New Objectivity movement in the years following World War I.

In Blossfeldt began his studies as an apprentice at the Art Ironworks and Foundry in Mägdesprung, Germany, where he studied sculpture and iron casting. He then moved to Berlin to study at the School of the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum). In Blossfeldt received a scholarship to study in Rome under Moritz Meurer, a decorative artist and professor of ornament and design. Along with several other assistants, Blossfeldt created and photographed casts of botanical specimens in and around Rome. He continued to work with Meurer through and traveled beyond Italy to North Africa and Greece to collect specimens. Beginning in Blossfeldt taught design at the School of the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule), and in he became professor emeritus. There he established a plant photography archive that he used to teach his students about design and patterns found in nature.
Blossfeldt had no formal training as a photographer and used homemade cameras that he outfitted with lenses capable of magnifying his subjects up to 30 times their natural size. The u

Karl Blossfeldt was born on June 13, in Schielo, a central German town within the Harz Mountains. At about sixteen, Blossfeldt started an apprenticeship that formed his basic understanding of visual arts, working as a caster in an ironworks foundry. Three years later he studied drawing at the Kunstgewerbemuseum’s education department in Berlin. In he was awarded a scholarship to assist in establishing basic course work for drawing classes using nature as a model. Blossfeldt began this project by systematically photographing plant forms in Italy. These images were later used in the classroom, by projecting them on the walls with slides.
In Blossfeldt became a permanent instructor at the Kunstgewerbeschule, where he taught “Modeling from Plants” for 31 years using the photographs he took in Italy or actual plant life.
Blossfeldt continued to photograph plant forms throughout his teaching career. In his work was represented by gallerist Karl Nierendorf and in a publication of his plant photographs, the first edition of “Urformen der Kunst” (Archetypes of Art) was published. This publication was so successful, a second edition was published within a year.
