Chariots of Fire is a movie that is based on the true stories of 2 men running in the Olympics. A key line of the film is spoken by Eric Liddell, a Scottish Christian whose hearts desire was to continue his parents missionary work in China. When his sister questioned his participation in the Olympics before going to China, this was his reply:
I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.
Sometimes I wonder how many believers sense that God made them for a purpose, and that their peculiar abilities were given by Him. God made Eric Liddell fast. When Eric ran he not only felt his pleasure in it but he also felt the pleasure of the Lord!
Maybe you know a great Christian leader, teacher, worship leader or evangelist that inspires you. You want to be like this person, but cant seem to get going in that direction. Listen, God also made YOU for a purpose! Your purpose! He made Eric Liddell fast. How did He make you? Did you ever stop to think that even your natural abilities can be a means of glorifying God and giving Him pleasure?

Eric Liddell > Quotes
“believe in God the Father, Almighty, Creator, infinitely holy and loving, who has a plan for the world, a plan for my life, and some daily work for me to do. I believe in Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, as Example, Lord, and Saviour. I believe in the Holy Spirit who is able to guide my life so that I may know God’s will; and I am prepared to allow him to guide and control my life. I believe in God’s law that I should love the Lord my God with all my heart, and with all my soul, and with all my mind, and with all my strength; and my neighbour as myself. I believe it is God’s will that the whole world should be without any barriers of race, colour, class, or anything else that breaks the spirit of fellowship. To believe means to believe with the mind and heart, to accept, and to act accordingly on that basis.”

The Eric Liddell story is well known. We all know the broad outline: He was one of Great Britains great hopes at the Olympics, he refused to race because of his Christian convictions, he switched races and won an event he had barely trained for, he left it all behind to travel to China to serve as a missionary, he died there in a Japanese prison camp. Its an amazing story, really.
I was recently reading For the Glory, a wonderful new biography of Liddell, and came across a sweet little vignette that happened much, much later. His wife, Florence, was now many years into her widowhood (and, in fact, had now been widowed a second time). Here is what happened:
One evening Florence sat on the couch at her daughter Heather’s home and watched a reel of celluloid she’d never seen before. It was Pathé’s black-and-white film of Liddell’s meters win in Paris. She saw then what anyone can view now on YouTube. The focus on his twenty-two-year-old face. Those long fingers resting on his hips. That number——on his shirt front. The crowd massed steeply behind him. That stare down the line and the curve of the Colombes track before the gun releases him on the race of a lifetime. His flee
