Arthur Wint – Jamaica’s First Olympic Gold Medalist in Track & Field

Arthur Wint was a Jamaican track and field athlete who made history when he became the first Jamaican to win an Olympic gold medal. Born in , Arthur Wint competed in the London Olympics in the metre dash and won Jamaica’s first ever Olympic gold. He went on to add a silver medal in the metre race, making him the star of Jamaica’s Olympic team. In total, he achieved seconds at the games, setting a new record for his country.

Arthur Wint was affectionately known as “The Gentle Giant” because of his massive 6-foot 6 inch frame and gentle personality. He was an inspiration to many Jamaicans and helped spark a national passion for track and field events. His remarkable achievements have since been celebrated across Jamaica, with Olympic fever reigniting every four years

Jamaica's chief scientist functioning as Advisor to the Prime Minister and Director General of the National Commission on Science and Technology().

As a biochemist, he has conducted extensive research on indigenous medicinal plants as potential therapeutic agents in Diabetes mellitus and Hypertension. This period of research spanned and yielded over 20 doctoral graduates supervised by him.

As a physician he has specialised in endocrinology and metabolic diseases and has carried out region-wide studies on Diabetes in the Caribbean. For this he was awarded the Queen's gold medal to the British Commonwealth for distinguished service to diabetes mellitus locally and internationally (); and also the Hellmut Mehnert  UNESCO/International Diabetes Federation(IDF) prize().

Renown for his philanthropy, research and medical services he was awarded the Gold Musgrave medal () and was honoured  by the government of Jamaica with the conferment of the Order of Jamaica().

ince his appointment to the post of president of the University of Technology (UTech) in March , Professor Errol Morrison has proved he has the Midas touch.

Under Morrison's tutelage, the university, once narrowly looked upon as Jamaica's bastard child of academia, has almost doubled the annual size of its graduating class, increased its enrolment by adding new faculties, and significantly spiked its income-earning power.

entered the president's office recently, it appeared that walls do talk as the ones in Morrison's office spoke eloquently of his achievements. Hardly any space remains on the walls to hang more accolades.

However, it became evident that Morrison is not your average academic. Despite being well decorated - including the Order of Jamaica; the Queen's Gold Medal to the Commonwealth through the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health; and the Gold Musgrave Award for outstanding services in the medical sciences - the professor seemingly does not wear his achievements on his lapel.
