In view of how little tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca [] recorded under his own name over the years, I was immensely fortunate to hear him play in performance on an almost weekly basis from about -
Of course, this observation is made in retrospect because like everyone else who directly experienced the West Coast Style of Jazz which was in vogue from in California from about , I assumed that the music would go on forever.
From to , I was an habitué of the Lighthouse Cafe at 30 Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, CA and although Bob Cooper was the resident tenor saxophonist, because Richie&#;s boyhood friend Stan Levey occupied the drum chair, bassist Howard Rumsey, who led the resident Lighthouse All-Stars, would often turn over the last set to Richie and a fabulous rhythm section made up of Victor Feldman on piano and Stan on drums, both members of the All-Stars, and a young bassist phenom, Scott LaFaro.

&#;This record was made in one afternoon a few months ago in a small, empty theatre in Los Angeles. Largely an accident, it is composed of men&#;outside of the two teams of Lewis-Heath (the MJQ) and Hamilton-Hall (Hamilton's Quintet)&#;who ordinarily do not work together or have not played together at all. As such, it is, like Armstrong's "Knockin' a Jug," a "motherless" session. Some of the great jazz records have been motherless sessions: many of Lionel Hampton's pick-up sides made in the late Thirties on Victor; Red Norvo's Comet session in with Parker, Gillespie, Phillips, Teddy Wilson, and Slam Stewart; the Teddy Wilson-Harry James-John Simmons-Red Norvo "Just a Mood." The head arrangements were done on the spot by Lewis, who acted as musical overseer for the date, and also contributed the blues-original, "Two Degrees East&#;Three Degrees West," a charming, infectious figure that should be expanded into a work for the MJQ. Richie Kamuca, born July 23, and died July 22, in Philadelphia. Kamuca, like many West Coast players, grew up in the East and moved west when bebop became the dominant style of jazz. His first playing was in the Lester Young style. He played on tour with Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. Kamuca also joined the line-ups of Herman’s Four Brothers saxophone section, which included Al Cohn, Bill Perkins, and Bill Perkins. Kamuca spent the rest of his life on the West Coast, playing with smaller groups like Chet Baker and Maynard Ferguson. In and , he was one of the Lighthouse All-Stars.
