Georgia O&#;Keeffe was born November 15 on a dairy farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. From a very early age she was drawn to art and was encouraged in the discipline by her parents; by the time she left high school she was convinced she wanted to be an artist.
Studying at the Art Institute of Chicago in and the Art Students League in New York, she drew considerable praise from her instructors but was discouraged and uninspired by their emphasis on realism and &#;perfection&#; in painting.
She longed for a style of her own, to capture in her paintings the feelings and gracefulness she saw in the world.
In , studying for a teachers degree in South Carolina, O&#;Keeffe met and took classes with Arthur Dow, an art enthusiast who worshiped oriental art rather than European art.

Georgia attended the Sacred Heart Academy, and here she had a chance to learn about drawing and painting. She also attended Saturday art lessons. She was one of seven children with parents who were dairy farmers.
She completed high school in Virginia and then studied at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. She then studied in New York, where she won a scholarship to study further at summer school.
However in she decided not to pursue a career as an artist, as she felt that she couldn't stand out in the style that had formed the basis of her training.
She had a four year hiatus, before returning to painting in when she attended a class at the University of Virginia.
Over the following few years she taught art, as well as developing her own style. In April of ten of her drawings were featured in an exhibition in New York, and a year later she had her first solo show at the same gallery.
By the mid 's she was known as one of the most important American artists.
