Amílcar Lopes Cabral was born in Bafatá (Guinea-Bissau) on September 12th , when he was still a child, he went to live in Cape Verde, where he studied. In , he gets a scholarship and enters the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Lisbon, where he meets Mário Pinto de Andrade, Agostinho Neto and Marcelino dos Santos at the Casa dos Estudantes do Império.
In , Cabral took part in the Bandung Conference and in , together with Aristides Pereira, his brother Luís Cabral, Fernando Fortes, Júlio de Almeida and Elisée Turpin, he founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). On August 3, , they lead the workers&#; strike at the Port of Pidjiguiti, which was strongly repressed by the colonial government, resulting in the death of dozens of demonstrators and hundreds of injured.
On 23 January , the armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism began.
On January 20, , Amilcar Cabral was assassinated in Conakry.
Cabral is one of the greatest thinkers of African anti-colonialism with an outstanding legacy in anti-colonial and anti-racist politics to this day.

Amílcar Lopes da Costa Cabral was born September 12, in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, one of Portugal’s African colonies. On January 20, &#;50 years ago today&#;Cabral was murdered by fascist Portuguese assassins just months before the national liberation movement in which he played a central role won the independence of Guinea-Bissau.
This particular struggle was waged for the liberation of not just one country&#;Guinea-Bissau, where the fighting took place&#;but also for another geographically-separate region, the archipelago Cape Verde. Cabral and the other leaders of the movement understood that they were fighting in a larger anti-colonial struggle and global class war and, as such, that their immediate enemies were not only the colonial governments of particular countries, but Portuguese colonialism in general.
